In the next episode of the weird and wonderful during my trip to Pittsburgh I have to tell you about the Mattress Factory.
Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum that was founded in 1977 by Barbara Luderowski in the shell of a building that used to house an actual mattress factory. Since opening they have acquired several more buildings in the neighborhood, becoming the Monterey street and Sampsonia annexes, as well as a few used for artist housing.
It’s a really interesting museum to me. I’m not a big contemporary art fan, but there was something really fun about Mattress Factory. The exhibits were all very different from each other, some of them a little more all encompassing than others. The Sampsonia annex felt like urban exploring, which I’ve always found really fun. The other two gallery buildings felt a little more traditional museum.
Overall, I would definitely recommend it. Daniel and I had a great time with the exhibits and taking photos of each other as we went through the buildings. Thanks again to pinterest for the tip!
